Sitges strengthens national and international markets at FITUR
Once again this year, Sitges as a destination is attending FITUR, the International Tourism Fair taking place in Madrid from 20 to 24 January. It is a meeting place for institutions, operating companies, accommodations, travel agencies and tourism professionals from around the world.
With the goal of strengthening the destination’s international and national promotion, Sitges arrives accompanied by the Sitges Town Council’s Councilwoman for Tourism at the 36th International Tourism Fair (FITUR) being held in Madrid from January 20 to 24. FITUR, the first activity on Sitges’ promotional calendar in Spain, is addressed both to the professional audience and the general public over the weekend.
As a part of FITUR, Sitges is working to promote the sea and sand, family, sports and gastronomic tourism sectors and meetings along with the other events, products and tourist the destination has to offer. Another line of work during the fair are the activities aimed at the national market. Last season, it was the top market to visit Sitges reaching 25.7%.
The Sitges delegation, headed by the Mayor of Sitges, Miquel Forns; the Councilwoman for Tourism, Aurora Carbonell; and the Councilman in charge of Institutional Relations, Josep Moliné, travelled to Madrid with the goal of planning out tourism promotion activities within the framework of the Fair and organizing meetings with the Ministry of Coasts to work on the course of action for Sitges’ beaches. Work meetings have also been arranged with representatives from the offices of Turespaña, the Agència Catalana de Turisme (Catalan Tourism Agency), Diputació de Barcelona (Barcelona City Council), tour operators and the press, to increase activities aimed at the national and international markets.
The Councilwoman for Tourism and Beaches, Aurora Carbonell, explains that “with Fitur, we are initiating promotional activities in the national market, strengthening resources, with sustainability policies and publicizing the calendar of events that will be taking place in Sitges throughout 2016 with the goal of attracting visitors and seasonally adjusting the demand”.
Last year, FITUR achieved its record of participation with 125,000 professionals from 140 countries and 230,000 visitors, numbers that make the Fair an essential business platform in the tourism sector.
