Garraf Nature Reserve

With an extension of more than 12,000 hectares and a radius that includes up to nine of the region’s towns, the Garraf Nature Reserve is one of the most important biological reserves in Catalonia.
With a particular orography that combines the white of the limestone with low areas full of vineyards and dry stone walls, the Reserve offers a varied sampling of Mediterranean fauna and flora.

With regard to the flora, fundamentally comprised of large areas of scrubland, worth noting are the palm (an almost native and abundant species in the area), reeds (a plant that is hard to find outside the Reserve) and other species of African origin. We can also find less exotic shrubs, such as the mastic or the kermes oak.
The further we go into the Reserve, the scrubland makes way for woodlands. Thanks to their number and colorfulness, the Holm oak and Aleppo pine forests deserve a special mention.

As for the fauna, there aren’t many species that have managed to make this area their own. We can find birds such as the blackbird and other less-known birds like the wheatear, the Ortelan bunting or the crested lark, and even the eagle or the falcon.

We can also find species that have adapted their African origin to the area’s conditions: horseshoe whip snakes, vipers or salamanders. The Reserve’s geological characteristics have also led to the existence of species used to cavernous environments, for example the greater horseshoe bat.

The most popular sports activity done here is spelunking, but it’s also great for climbing, trekking and mountain biking. Using the itineraries, which have different levels of difficulty, you can get to know all the Reserve’s different corners in depth. The Fondo de Vallgrassa itinerary allows you to enjoy excellent views of the massif and its surroundings, and the Masíes del Garraf itinerary takes you around the farmhouses scattered about the territory. And also in the center of the Reserve is the unique Plana Novella complex (a Buddhist Monastery).
There is also a sensory itinerary for the blind, where contact with the Reserve is strengthened by working with the stimuli that senses like hearing and smell can offer. Accessible for people with functional diversity, accommodations, parking and picnic area.

Travel time by car: 15 minutes.
You can go: by car, on foot.
