Its unique natural environment, religious nature and the art it houses make Montserrat a singular space. This impressive mass of rock, rounded by erosion, is Catalonia’s sacred mountain and was declared a Natural Park in 1987. In the Sanctuary is the Romanesque statue of the Virgin of Montserrat, also known as La Moreneta on account of her dark face, declared patron saint of Catalonia in 1881. The Benedictine monastery is now formed by 80 monks; for nearly 1000 years it has been at the service of all pilgrims and visitors to the mountain. Montserrat also has a notable Boys Choir, the oldest in Europe.
