The Cistercian Route comprises three historicaland cultural gems that are unique to Catalonia: the monasteries of Santes Creus, Poblet and Vallbona de les Monges, clear exponents of the architecture of the transition from Romanesque to Gothic. The vitality of these three Catalan abbeys is evident in the great buildings which have been conserved and are amongst the most important Cistercian abbeys in Europe. Located in Tarragona province, the three monasteries are an example of the austere lifestyle that characterised the Cistercian order and influenced their buildings. Poblet, a Unesco world heritage site, and Vallbona are still home to religious communities and have small guest houses, ideal for a few days’ rest and retreat.
