Festivals & traditions

Sitges embraces its traditional festivals intensely and with popular participation. Visitors and tourists mix with Sitges locals to get the true festival experience.  Some of its most outstanding celebrations are the Festa Major, the town’s main annual fiesta, in the month of August; Santa Tecla and the Wine Harvest Festival, in September, the Carnival, in February, the Barcelona – Sitges Vintage Car Rally, in March, Corpus Christi in June and the Sitges International Fantastic Film Festival of Catalonia. Another revived tradition are the Human Towers, with performances from April to October.

  • Corpus Christi (floral carpets): 22 June 2014, declared a Festival of National Tourist & Artistic Interest.

On Corpus Christi Sunday, the main streets of Sitges awake beneath floral carpets designed by neighbors who live one these same streets after working all night to create them. In the afternoon the religious procession, headed by children who have just received their first communion, walks across the carpets.

  • Festa Major: 20-25 August 2014, declared a Festival of National Interest.

The 24th of August is Saint Bartholomew Day, the town’s patron saint, and on the 23rd and 24th, giants, devils and traditional dance groups hit the streets to honor him. The festival begins with the entrance of the grallers, traditional Catalan horn players, on the 23rd at 12 noon, with a spectacular fireworks display later on as the piece de resistance of the fiesta. The fireworks display is the evening of the 23rd at 23:00 at night down at Fragata beach.

  • Santa Tecla: 22-23 September 2014

Sitges’ smaller version of the Festa Major held in honor of their female patron saint, Santa Tecla. Despite being a more family-oriented event than Festa Major, it also includes great moments like the traditional children’s parade held on 23 September at 7 in the morning, when children come out to perform with papier-mâché giants and beasts made by the kids themselves.

  • Wine Harvest Festival and Wine Fair: 4-5 October 2014

Looking back on Sitges’ winemaking roots, this event is held every year coinciding with the Sitges International Fantastic Film Festival of Catalonia. The Festival includes a Wine Fair that takes place down on the Paseo de la Ribera Promenade and where products from the Penedès region have a special relevance.

  • Sitges-International Fantastic Film Festival of Catalonia: 3-12 October 2014.

This festival is one of the most prominent film competitions in all of Spain along with the San Sebastián Festival. The Sitges Festival is in its 47th year and has brought together acclaimed directors and actors tan like Quentin Tarantino, Elijah Wood, Anthony Hopkins, Jodie Foster, Daniel Brühl, Santiago Segura and Luís Tosar among many others. The multitudinous Zombie Walk is also outstanding.

  • Carnival: February 2015

Sitges has one of the most multitudinous carnivals with the greatest tradition in Catalonia. From Fat Thursday until Ash Wednesday, the truly climatic moments are the parades on Sunday and Tuesday. The children’s floats come out at noon and the grownups’ at night, filling the streets with wild abandon and joy. This year there were 50 participating floats, 2,500 people in disguise and 300,000 spectators

  • Barcelona - Sitges International Vintage Car Rally: 22 March 2015, declared a Festival of National Tourist Interest.

The International Vintage Car Rally has been organized since 1959 and brings together classic cars and motorcycles from before 1924, most of which belong to private collections. They all arrive in Sitges from Barcelona driving down the Garraf Coast, with all participants dressed in period garb. This year 60 vintage cars and 15 motorcycles participated. The event is rounded off with an exhibition of super deluxe sports cars and music in the street.
