The story is set in Venice and begins with the engagement of Clarice and Silvio, made possible because Clarice’s former fiancé, Federico Rasponi, was believed to be dead. The celebration is interrupted when Truffaldino arrives announcing that Federico is alive. In reality, it is Beatrice Rasponi disguised as her brother, who has come to recover the dowry and to find her beloved Florindo. Truffaldino, seeking to earn more money, ends up serving both Beatrice and Florindo at the same time without their knowledge, causing a series of comic entanglements and misunderstandings that complicate the situation until the final resolution.
